Isabella by Kirstin Downey5/10/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Whether saintly or satanic, no female leader has done more to shape our modern world, in which millions of people in two hemispheres speak Spanish and practice Catholicism. She also annihilated all who stood against her by establishing a bloody religious Inquisition that would darken Spain's reputation for centuries. She sponsored Columbus's trip to the Indies and negotiated Spanish control over much of the New World with the help of Rodrigo Borgia, the infamous Pope Alexander VI. She laid the foundation for a unified Spain. She ended a twenty-four-generation struggle between Muslims and Christians, forcing North African invaders back over the Mediterranean Sea. In 1474, when most women were almost powerless, twenty-three-year-old Isabella defied a hostile brother and a mercurial husband to seize control of Castile and León. An engrossing and revolutionary biography of Isabella of Castile, the controversial Queen of Spain who sponsored Christopher Columbus's journey to the New World, established the Spanish Inquisition, and became one of the most influential female rulers in historyīorn at a time when Christianity was dying out and the Ottoman Empire was aggressively expanding, Isabella was inspired in her youth by tales of Joan of Arc, a devout young woman who unified her people and led them to victory against foreign invaders. ![]()

Cold comfort farm author5/10/2023 ![]() One of Flora’s letters is from Mr Mybug, the pseudo-intellectual poseur she encountered all those years ago whose favourite theory was that Branwell Brontё had written Wuthering Heights. The post had just arrived, and the family party were occupied in reading its letters. ![]() ![]() The nose retained its classic elegance the work she seldom thought of nowadays, for Flora had five children. Flora, it may be remembered, had been Flora Poste noted for the straightness of her nose and the efficacy of her restorative work at Cold Comfort Farm in Sussex. On a sunny morning in the midst of the Second Dark Ages, Flora and Charles Fairford were seated at breakfast on the vicarage overlooking the Regent’s Park where they had lived since Charles’s ordination thirteen years ago. The opening of the book is just so evocative of all the qualities I love in middlebrow mid 20th century fiction, Flora is now married to vicar Charles Fairford, living in London & the mother of five children. Sixteen years have passed since Flora Poste, Robert Poste’s Child, arrived at Cold Comfort Farm to sort out the lives of the Starkadder family. My copy of the sequel, Conference at Cold Comfort Farm, arrived on Friday & I settled down last Saturday afternoon to read it. Vintage are reprinting several novels by Stella Gibbons, author of one of my favourite books, Cold Comfort Farm. ![]()

A collapse of horses stories5/10/2023 ![]() And yet, on the edge of the paddock, not twenty yards distant, a man fills their trough with water. ![]() They do not breathe and do not, as far as you can see, move. All four are prone, with no horses standing. Lying there on their sides, in the dust, unnaturally still, are four horses. Imagine this: walking through the countryside one day you come across a paddock. Now it is your turn to listen to me, to listen to my proofs, though I know you will not be convinced. Why you choose to pretend to be, and what you hope to gain from it: this is what interests me. You are not one of them, you cannot be, for if you were you would be dead. But in their case they did not recover, but perished. I am certain they burned, that their faces blackened and bubbled, just as did my own. I am certain nobody in my family survived. ![]() ![]() This story has been drawn from the February/March issue of the American Reader, available here. ![]()

Winesburg ohio novel5/9/2023 ![]() ![]() 24 on the Modern Library’s list of 100 best American novels. Today that book, “Winesburg, Ohio,” is a staple of high school English classes and an acknowledged classic - No. “Winesburg” quickly became a cultural byword, a metaphor for the yawning emptiness of rural life. They were, the writer believed, casualties of a close-minded culture, condemned to live out a lonely, alienated existence. These “grotesques,” as Anderson called them, had allowed doubt and fear to overwhelm their better instincts. Drawing on his own experience growing up in the agricultural hamlet of Clyde, Ohio, he breathed life into a band of neurotic castaways adrift on the flatlands of the Midwest, each of them in their own way struggling - and failing - to locate meaning, personal connection and love amid the town’s elm-shaded streets. In the autumn of 1915, while living in a bohemian boardinghouse on Chicago’s Near North Side, Sherwood Anderson began work on a collection of tales describing the tortured lives of the inhabitants of Winesburg, a fictional Ohio town, in the 1890s. ![]()
